The Hosemobile: The evolutionary link between math rock, jazz, and jambands

If you were to ask me what kinds of music I listen to, I'd tell you "Math rock, jazz, and some jam band stuff" which, even for me, seems like a pretty fucking random combo. So one day I was dicking around youtube and I came across this. It wasn't the most complex 'math rock', not even close. It wasn't jazz either, nor was it a jam. To describe this band, within my limited understanding and lexicon, i'd say it was a mashup that flowed from the ear-tricking, odd timed grooves (that I love about 'math rock' so much), to a unique timbre that oozed from their sound; jazz-esque. Finally they have this intangible jam band quality. Even though their songs are highly structured (like a math rock tune) they have this 'Talking heads' and 'Phish' quality to their music due to the spoken vocals and the Composed > jam > composed structure of some of their songs. Not only this, but they effortlessly transcend genres, tempo, and mood/feel multiple times within a song, much like a jam band. Anyway, I was surprised to find out that this somewhat forgotten, under appreciated, obscure band used to tour and play festivals with another favorite band of mine, 'Scheligo', a funky jazz group. This personal discovery was actually reassuring to me (in a weird way) because this band is a link between the types of music I listen to; all of which seem to have nothing to do with each other. This mid to late 90's band is one of those hidden treasures, and if you listen to the same music as me, maybe you'll understand where i'm coming from when I say these guys are a missing evolutionary link in the super organism that is music.

Ozric Tentacles

Whats up Ladies and Gentlemen, I know it's been a while, but heres some tasty shit to get your earholes wet. Ozric Tentacles has everything you want when it comes to tripped-out prog rock; Space-y weirdness, crazy psychedelic freak outs, and straight alien jams (All you Phish, Umphrees, and Bisco fans are gonna love it). They have a ton of material but don't let that overwhelm you. I'd recommend the albums "Jurassic Shift","Tantric Obstacles", and "Live at the Pongmasters Ball" but all their albums are very good and very similar, so pick through and find some gems. I stumbled across a song called "Spacebase" that literally made my jaw drop.

Mouse On The Keys

Alright ladies and gentlemen, heres another dope fucking band that you need to take a listen to. Mouse On They Keys is a trio of japanese dudes that are unlike anything I have ever listened to. They are a fusion of Jazz and Rock and do it better than anybody else. The band is two guys on the keys and one drummer. Some songs have sax and some other brass too; these crazy mother fuckers are multi-instrumantal. This is music for everybody, especially all you drummers. Take a listen, but be warned, you may need to change your underwear afterwards.
Some songs to help you get your feet wet..."Spectres De Mouse", "Saigo No Bansan", and "Unflexable Grids" But again, all their material is incredible. If you like these three songs, you know what to do.

The Mattson 2

I had to choose the Mattson 2 as my first band to share because these guys are un-fucking-real. Seriously. They're a jazz/surf-rock duo, twin brothers, and absolutely amazing musicians. They have 3 albums out already and one is a collaboration with guitarist Ray Barbee but I don't know too much about these guys. Just take a listen, you will not be disapointed.

Some of my favorites are "Ode To Lou", "Pleasure Point", "Man From Aanmnesis", "Julian The Mountain" and "Chi Nine" to name a few, but every song they have is great.
